Today, our diverse group of cyclists braved the extreme heat of the desert in our travels from Julian to Brawley, CA. One of our gracious hosts, Cheryl referred to Brawley as a "reclaimed" desert as we eyed her car thermometer locked at 118 degrees. The morning began with an exhilarating 10 mile descent into the desert, with the temperature soaring as we descended. Then the remainder of our long 78 mile day began, cranking on the pedals through miles of arid desolate wasteland. I distinctly remember asking myself, "Why did anyone build a road here?"
Despite all our woes, cramps, and general exhaustion all of our miles were more than rewarded with the limitless hospitality of the Brawley First Presbyterian Church and their staff. We met individuals like Pastor Bob, Cheryl, and the ever vivacious and wise Margaret who showered us with her concern and care. Thank you also to all who I may not have named!
Tomorrow raises the bar yet again as we leave the agricultural town of Brawley and traverse almost 90 miles to the town of Blythe, CA. Who knows what lies in store, but that's why they call it a bicycle adventure!

Water never sounded so good, has it? Keep up the great adventure!!
You guys are so lucky. I'm forced to live vicariously through my dad. Keep up the great work. I'm sure you already know this is the trip of a lifetime.. Maybe I can join you for the 2nd annual.... ;)
Hey Guys,
Where is Day 3? We are worried that in all the heat you didn't make it to Parker. We had such a wonderful time with all of you that we feel like we are you family now....so we worry like parents would!
We continue to pray that you can make it through this heat wave...114 in Phoenix today. Blessings,
Pastor Bob, DeAnne, Cheryl and Teri
Here's hoping that the ride went (hot but) fine and finding Internet last night is why we don't see a new entry. -- :) no pressure, just hoping & praying things are going well. Teri, Brawley
We're looking for Day 3 as well! And now day 4....Hope all is going smoothly, and you get some shade.
Prayers are with you! Knowing God always has His watchful eye on your safety is a comforting thought!
For everyone following the riders, Katherine also has a nice webpage about the ride at www.xcbikestories.com
